Symposium Details and Conditions for Artists
    1 Location and Time
The fourth Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium will take place for six weeks from
approximately July 22 through August 31, 2012 (final dates are to be set). The fourth Schoodic
International Sculpture Symposium will be held at the University of Maine on the Orono campus.
2 The Goals of the Symposium:
The 2012 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium will be the fourth in a 10-year cycle of
symposia. Our goal is to provide sculpture for public locations in Maine and to increase the
public awareness of sculpture in this part of the world. Completed sculptures will be installed at
public sites in Eastern Maine towns and cities, forming a growing Sculpture Trail that spans over
    120 miles (192 km).
    3 Organizers:
The Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium is the largest public sculpture Symposium in
the USA. The Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium is a non-profit organization, working
in partnership with the University of Maine who is hosting the 2012 event on their campus. The
project engages communities who will receive the finished pieces.
4 The Invited artists will receive:
 Airfare, reimbursed up to $1500 USD with receipts.
     Housing
     Meals
 Ground Transportation provided to and from Maine airports, and during the symposium
    to community and symposium events.
     $5000 Honorarium
Housing is located near the facility, a spacious and well equipped location. Since the housing
has kitchens, artists may wish to cook and eat communally. The closest air terminal is Bangor
    International Airport, Maine (various carriers).
The symposium will publish a catalogue of the Symposium and a trail map that shows the
location of the installed sculptures. Information regarding the events of the Symposium will be
promoted through various media sources such as the Internet, television and radio.
    5 The symposium provides:
     Compressed Air
     Electricity and Electric Cords
     Air Hoses
 Fork Lift (and other necessary heavy equipment for moving and positioning stone)
 Quarried granite blocks of various shapes and sizes not to exceed 18,000 lbs.
    PO Box 122 Steuben, Maine 04680 USA  Tel. (207) 263-6057  www.schoodicsculpture.org
Sculptors should bring other tools as desired. Please check with the Symposium regarding the
    availability of specialized equipment.
Stone will be supplied by the Symposium for use in the sculpture project. Both granite and
basalt will be made available. The stone is quarried close to the Symposium site and there will
be a good choice of blocks. Maine granites vary in texture and color; colors range from white
through gray and black and also pinks and multi-colors. During the 19th century, the Maine’s
coast was a major supplier of building stone, monument stone and paving block, and had
    dozens of operating quarries.
    6 The Artist Responsibility:
 To create an original design of a large scale granite sculpture for the selected
    community.
 To scale the design appropriate for a six-week sculpture project.
 To finish before the closing date of the Symposium.
 To remain on site during the entire symposium and be present for the closing ceremony.
7 Timeline for the Application Process:
December 31, 2011 Postmark deadline for applications.
January 15, 2012 Artist Selection panel meets to consider applications.
March 15, 2012 Notification to selected artists.
8 Theme of the 2011 Symposium:
The Symposium is not a themed event; however in achieving our objective to produce large
scale granite sculptures throughout the coastal area of Maine, we encourage the artistic and
cultural exchange between artists of varying backgrounds, using different sculpture styles. The
Symposium is an opportunity for communities, schools, artists and members of the public to
come together to celebrate the international art form and learn about our unique local heritage.
    9 Selection of Participants:
The selection of artists is made by special jury in consideration of the submitted portfolio and
nature of sculptures and documents presented.
To be considered for participation, artists should present:
    1. A signed copy of the Artist Application form
    2. An artist’s statement
    3. CD/DVD images of prior work.
    4. Artists resume
The artists selected for participation in the 2012 Symposium will be announced on March 15,
2012. Artist notification will be mailed after this date.
    PO Box 122 Steuben, Maine 04680 USA  Tel. (207) 263-6057  www.schoodicsculpture.org
    10 Other conditions:
 The artist may use personal tools for use in the creation of their work.
 All sculptures created during the 2012 Symposium are the property of the Schoodic
International Sculpture Symposium and the communities in which the works are
    installed.
 The artists are expected to remain in residence throughout the duration of the
    symposium.
 In addition, the artists will be expected to participate in various community based
functions in generating support for the event.
    11 Symposium Schedule:
The Symposium begins the middle of July and continues through the last week in August of
2012, for a total of six (6) weeks. Exact dates will be determined. Artists are expected to arrive
a few days prior to the opening of the event and are required to remain on site until the closing
    ceremonies.
